OCHA: Millions of Sudanese are Fleeing War

Sudan Events /Follow-ups

The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Aid (OCHA) has announced that the number of people fleeing the war in Sudan has risen to more than 7.4 million people.
OCHA said in a press statement on Sunday, “More than 7.4 million people have been displaced inside and outside Sudan since the outbreak of fighting between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) on April 15, 2023.”
It added, “The number of displaced people in Sudan increased by about 611,000 people over the past month, mainly due to conflict-induced displacement from parts of the Gezira and other states.”
It pointed out that the expansion of fighting between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the RSF Militia forces in central and eastern Sudan led to a significant increase in humanitarian needs during the harvest season.
OCHA explained that insecurity, looting, bureaucratic obstacles, poor network and telephone connectivity, cash shortages, and the limited number of technical and humanitarian staff affect the delivery of humanitarian aid in many parts of the country.
It further said, “The Sudan Humanitarian Needs and Response Plan appeal for 2024 has been funded by 3.1 percent until January 14, 2024.”
Since last April 15, an armed conflict has been taking place between the Sudanese army, led by Lieutenant General Abdul Fattah Al-Burhan, and his former deputy, commander of the RSF Militia, Mohammed Hamdan Dagalo.
According to international reports, the fighting led to the death of more than 12,000 civilians.
