Sudan Denounces Unfair European Sanctions

Sudan has sharply criticized the European Union Council’s decision to impose sanctions on 6 Sudanese entities that it said were responsible for undermining stability and transition in the country, describing it as unfair and lacking objectivity and fairness.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said, in a statement on Tuesday that the decision embodied the imbalance in moral standards and the lack of a sense of justice, by imposing sanctions on three Sudanese national economic institutions that were allegedly, along with three companies affiliated to the Janjaweed militia, responsible for supporting activities that undermine stability and political transition.
It added that the unfair decision was based on the comparison that lacked the slightest foundations of objectivity and fairness between the armed forces, the national army that defends the Sudanese people, their independence and dignity, and a terrorist militia that brings together dozens of thousands of mercenaries who commit crimes of genocide, ethnic cleansing, sexual violence and terrorism, as confirmed by the report of United Nations Monitors on the Sudan, in Implementation of Security Council Resolution No. 1591.
The Ministry pointed out that the experts’ report provided sufficient information about those who threaten the stability of Sudan and the entire region, and those who commit war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide or help to commit them, including partners and allies of the European Union.
It further said that the European Union was expected to shoulder its responsibilities toward international and regional peace by pressuring those to stop providing weapons, mercenaries, financing, and media support to the terrorist militia, “but instead it chose to hide behind the pretext of neutrality between what it calls “two warring parties.”
The statement stressed that the approach of sanctions against national institutions will not help achieve peace, but rather rewards the aggressor, turns a blind eye to his violations, and belittles the victims. “Also, the justification for targeting the three economic institutions due to their affiliation to the armed forces is surprising and denouncing.”
It stressed that the right and duty to defend the country require the armed forces to strive to achieve sufficiency in defensive equipment, and all laws guarantee the right to self-defense.
The Foreign Ministry pointed out that (Zadna) is a leading national company that seeks to modernize the agricultural sector in Sudan, achieve food security, and encourage the private sector as well as entrepreneurs to invest in agriculture as the first tool for achieving sustainable development and social justice in the country, and wondered how this contributes to undermining stability and political transition.
