Federal Minister of Agriculture, Dr. Abu Bakr Al-Bushra, praised the lifting of the ban on importing onions from Sudan by some countries.

The Minister of Agriculture explained to (Al-Ahdath) that in September 2023, his ministry opened onion exports to protect the product after the recession that occurred in the market and the price of a sack reached only 5 to 10 thousand pounds.

He indicated that only one country agreed to import Sudanese onions, which is the Republic of South Sudan, revealing that estimated quantities were exported to South Sudan, and the price of onions in the Sudanese market rose, while the rest of the countries used the method of packing and the weight of the packages as an excuse. “We explained the matter to the exporters and they adhered to the specifications.” He added. He noted the incompleteness of export, and attributed this to the fact that there is an Indian and Turkish mafia that controls imports to those countries.

Sudanese websites reported that Sudanese exporters received requests from Saudi, Kuwaiti and Emirati companies to import onions, due to the cessation of their exports from the State of India, following the closure of the Bab al-Mandab Strait linking the countries of the Asian continent and the countries of the Middle East, which is controlled by the Yemeni Houthi group, which threatens the transit movement of commercial ships.

Sudanese traders expected onion prices to rise in the local market after the opening of exports.
