High productivity of onions in Shandi
Sudan Events – Rehab Abdullah
The onion crop in Shendi locality, River Nile State, achieved high productivity, and productivity ranged between (270) to (300) bags per acre.
The cultivated areas amounted to 26 thousand and one hundred acres, out of the area originally targeted for this winter season, which amounted to 40 thousand acres.
The cultivated areas included all government projects, namely Al-Bajrawiyah, Kabushiyah, Al-Misaikatab, Gandatu, and the Association of Advancement, in addition to the private and investment sector.
The Executive Director of Shindi Locality, Khaled Abdul Ghaffar Al-Sheikh, witnessed the start of onion harvesting operations in the Tarajma area, north of Shindi, as part of a tour that included many agricultural projects to determine the start of harvesting winter crops such as wheat, onions, and beans, in addition to potatoes and other vegetables.
Khaled Abdel Ghaffar Al-Sheikh praised the great effort made by the farmers, despite the security conditions the country is going through, as they achieved this high productivity by applying technical packages and improved seeds.
He said that the success of the winter season with these high rates of productivity contributes to the stability of the country and securing its needs, and represents support for the armed forces as they fight the battle of dignity.
Khaled pointed out that the high productivity in the areas planted with onions has compensated for the remaining targeted areas that were not planted for various reasons.
For his part, the Director of the Agriculture Department in Shendi Locality, Engineer Muhammad Musa, confirmed that his administration was keen to provide everything necessary for the success of the winter season, but the farmer outdid himself by monitoring and caring for the crop.
The farmers, Saad Abdel Rahman and Abdel Haq Ibrahim, expressed their happiness with the success achieved by the winter season despite the war conditions that the country is going through and the attention exerted by the local administration and the agriculture department to result in this high productivity.
Onion prices witnessed a noticeable decline after the influx of production into the markets.
