Washington Calls for Resumption of Sudan Negotiations after Ramadan

US Special Envoy to Sudan, Tom Perriello, expressed his hope that the two parties to the conflict in Sudan would resume dialogue after Ramadan and to prevent the outbreak of a broader regional war, despite the failure of the last negotiations.
The former Congressman, who was recently appointed as an envoy to Sudan after a tour that included seven countries, said that the talks, which Saudi Arabia will participate in leading, may begin around April 18.
He told reporters after his return to Washington, “Anyone who thought that the way was paved for either party to achieve a clear victory must realize very clearly at this phase that the situation is not so.”
Agence France-Presse (AFP) quoted Priillot as saying, “The war of attrition…not only represents a disaster for civilians, but it could easily spark more divisions and become a regional war.”
War broke out in April 2023 between the SAF and the Rapid Support Forces RSF killing 10,000 people, forcing millions to flee and pushing the poverty-stricken country to the brink of famine.
The last rounds of talks that took place in the Saudi city of Jeddah resulted only in general pledges to stop the conflict in Sudan.
Despite, he was optimistic about the resumption of formal negotiations, Perriello affirmed the need not to “glorify the start of the talks” and said that the US and other countries were looking into incentives that could lead to the ending of the war.
