Western countries: “There is an urgent need for a ceasefire in Sudan”

Special Envoys (France, Norway, the United Kingdom, the United States of America USA and the European Union EU and representatives on Sudan issued joint statement calling on the warring parties to adhere to their obligations under international humanitarian law and international human rights law, and to ensure full and unimpeded humanitarian access to mitigate the growing risk of famine.
The joint statement welcomed the proposed resumption of talks in Jeddah, and stressed the urgent need to reach a ceasefire and restore humanitarian access.
The joint statement indicated that the only way to achieve sustainable peace is through a representative and comprehensive Sudanese process that leads to the restoration of the transition to democracy.
The joint statement pointed out that the upcoming humanitarian conference in Paris is an important opportunity to address the gap in humanitarian funding and give momentum to a coordinated regional and international response.
With about a year having passed since the Sudan war, the statement emphasized that there is no military solution to the conflict.
It called on the warring parties to stop fighting and agree to a permanent ceasefire immediately.
