United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has said that the indiscriminate attacks that kill, injure and terrorize civilians in Sudan could be considered war crimes and crimes against humanity, warning against the escalation of fighting in North Darfur state.
Guterres explained that militias affiliated with the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) attacked and burned villages west of El Fasher earlier this week, and that recent reports of escalating hostilities in El Fasher are a new cause for grave concern.
Speaking to reporters, he added, “Let me be more clear: any attack on El Fasher will be devastating to civilians and may lead to a comprehensive societal conflict throughout Darfur.”
He continued, “Any attack on El Fasher would harm relief operations in an area that is already on the brink of famine.”
