Sudan  Events – Rehab Abdullah

The representative of the herders in Gedaref State, Mayor Hassan Siddiq, warned against the continuing frictions and problems of herders on the border with Ethiopia.

During his talk to Sudan Events, he revealed that some were killed and some were injured due to problems with the Ethiopians.

He stressed the necessity of implementing the IGAD Protocol for the freedom of movement of livestock between countries, and described it as a lifeline for herders and farmers. He said that the protocol regulates the movement of animals between countries because the movement already exists, and he added, “Now 50% of Sudan’s livestock are in the South and the other 50% in the State of Ethiopia,” and he stressed that not to hesitate in implementing the protocol, and expected it to address many problems, describing the situation in Gedaref as a “time bomb” due to friction. He said, “What is happening in Darfur could have happened in Gedaref and there would be fighting and casualties, had it not been for the fact that they were native administrations who were able to control it by sparing bloodshed.”  .
