Sudan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations: Human Rights Council Decision Imposed on Us
Sudan Events – Talal Mudathir
Sudan’s Permanent Ambassador to the United Nations, Ambassador Hassan Hamed, criticised the decision of the Human Rights Council, which was voted on today, calling for a fact-finding team to investigate violations occurring in Sudan. The ambassador stated that the decision was ‘imposed’ on Sudan, criticising what he described as ‘politicisation, selectivity, double standards, and a lack of respect for state sovereignty.’
He said, ‘Those who sponsored the decision should know that they have put all areas of cooperation at stake.’
The text of the decision, which was amended to change its status from an investigative committee to a fact-finding team, mandates the establishment of an independent international mission in Sudan with the following responsibilities:
Investigate all alleged human rights violations and abuses.
Collect and analyse evidence of violations and abuses.
Identify individuals and entities responsible.
Make recommendations on accountability measures to ensure impunity is not allowed.
Focus mainly on human rights and humanitarian situations in areas of most significant concern, including Khartoum and Darfur.
