Gedaref Merchants Go on Strike
Sudan Events – Rehab Abdullah
The owners of the “utensils and spices” shops in Gedaref went on strike, in protest against the increases in the rent value and the municipal fees imposed on them, an increase of 400%.
The merchants’ spokesman, Mohammad Al-Sheikh, said that they closed their stores because the authorities raised the monthly rental fees from (60) thousand pounds to (300) thousand, the waste fees from (15,000) to (32,800), and the “veranda” fee from (15) thousand to (32) thousand and the license ranges from (73) thousand to (178,600) pounds.
Al-Sheikh denounced the arbitrary method that the municipal authorities practiced against them in taking cards or removing merchants’ goods in exchange for them, in a manner he described as barbaric, which does not resemble the relationship between the municipality and merchants.
The resistance committees in Gedaref State appealed to all concerned parties to provide justice to merchants, not to impose taxes and levies at the expense of the grieving citizen, and to restrict livelihoods.
