Human Rights Watch: Violations in Al-Jazirah Are Hidden

Sudan Events – Agencies

A senior official at Human Rights Watch described the humanitarian situation in Sudan as deteriorating and expressed the organization’s concern about it. He noted that their estimates suggest a near collapse due to the economic, humanitarian, and health crises caused by the war.

The human rights official confirmed that the suffering of civilians is increasing day by day due to the nature of the conflict and its direct impact on the delivery of humanitarian aid. He pointed out that the lack of sufficient security, the absence of neutral international organizations to monitor the situation, and the targeting of activists in humanitarian work make the delivery of aid extremely difficult.

Mohammed Osman, the organization’s Sub-Saharan Africa director, criticized the position of the Coordinating Council of Civil Democratic Forces (Tagdam). According to Al-Muhaqiq, he noted that they avoid explicitly addressing the humanitarian issue and the violations being committed. He stated that directly discussing the violations and humanitarian aspects could serve as a pressure tool for the international community to focus directly on these issues. He added, “There are significant voices that are not being represented, such as women’s groups, youth, doctors, and lawyers,” describing the efforts as scattered.

Osman expressed his concern about the violations occurring specifically in Al-Jazirah State, Khartoum, and some other states. He pointed out that these are hidden violations and described the violations committed by the Rapid Support Forces as a war on civilians. He added, “It is a war on civilians,” and said, “There is targeting based on ethnicity, whether in Darfur states or those displaced to other states.”
