Sudan Events – Agencies

Humanitarian agencies have issued a warning that the risk of famine looms in 14 areas in Sudan, affecting both residents, displaced persons IDPs and refugees.

The Integrated Food Security Phase Classification – which is jointly prepared by humanitarian agencies and their partners – and which was published on Thursday, reported that after fourteen months of conflict, Sudan is facing the worst levels of acute food insecurity recorded there, as more than half of the population – 25.6 million people – are expected to face the “crisis” level or worse conditions during the period from June to September 2024.
It indicated that during the same period, 755,000 people in 10 states, including the five major Darfur states as well as the states of South and North Kordofan, Blue Nile, Gezira and Khartoum, are facing the level of catastrophe or famine – which is the fifth phase of the classification. While 8.5 million people – 18 percent of the population – are facing a phase 4 emergency.
