Ministry of Irrigation Insists on Water Fees Increase

Sudan Events – Rehab Abdullah

The Ministry of Irrigation insisted on increasing the water fees per acre from 10,000 to 25,000 pounds. It rejected the farmers’ request to reduce it, despite the farmers organizing a protest in front of the headquarters of the Al-Gezira Project in Barakat, which forced the project governor to retract the decision to increase it and announce its reduction to 10 pounds.

Several farmers considered that the increase was made without a legitimate right, denouncing its imposition in light of the circumstances of the country currently witnessing war and the suspension of most of the state’s machinery, in addition to the inability of the Ministry of Irrigation to provide the necessary irrigation for the summer season.
