Government Denies Existence of Famine in Zamzam Camp

Sudan Events – Follow-ups

The Humanitarian Aid Commission denied international reports of famine in Zamzam camp for IDPs in El Fasher and other camps in North Darfur state.

The Humanitarian Aid Commission explained that merely talking about the existence of famine in these camps is not consistent with the elements and conditions that must be met to declare famines.

And that the rebel Rapid Support Forces RSF are the ones causing the starvation of citizens by preventing food aid from reaching them.

The Commission said in a statement on Sunday, “We closely follow what is issued by various parties, international or regional organizations, or specialized networks on everything related to humanitarian affairs.

What was recently reported by the Famine Early Warning Systems Network on 8/1/2024 AD regarding the humanitarian situations in Zamzam camp for IDPs in El Fasher that there is famine in this camp and in other camps in North Darfur state, so the Humanitarian Aid Commission clarifies that what was stated in the report of this network has no connection to the truth.”

It added: “The report of the Humanitarian Aid Commission in North Darfur state dated 03/08/2024 stated that a joint visit by the relevant government agencies and some international organizations took place on 23/07/2023 to Zamzam camp, where this visit revealed the stability of the humanitarian situation and that the organizations are providing assistance in the sectors of health, nutrition, primary health care and reproductive health.

These organizations are (the French organization ( MSF) the International Solidarity Organization and the International Relief Organization).

Therefore, the Humanitarian Aid Commission denies these allegations and affirms that the shortage of food and humanitarian aid in these sites and camps is originally due to the siege imposed by the rebel Rapid Support Forces RSF and the continuous artillery shelling by this militia of health facilities and centers and camps for sheltering the displaced around the city of El Fasher.

This militia is now detaining a number of humanitarian aid trucks belonging to (MSF)for four weeks in the Kabkabiya area and preventing them from entering the city of El Fasher to help the IDPs in the camps.”
