Algeria called on the conflicting parties in Sudan to a humanitarian ceasefire, which would allow for the safe evacuation of people to conflict-free areas.
The Permanent Representative of Algeria to the United Nations said in his speech during the open briefing session to discuss the humanitarian situation in Sudan at the Security Council that the catastrophic humanitarian situation in Sudan is getting worse over time.
The ambassador relied – according to “Al-Quds Al-Arabi” – on what was stated in the latest report issued by the Famine Review Committee of the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification, which gave a clear idea of the situation in Zamzam, Abu Shuk and Al-Salam areas, where the camps for internally displaced persons are located.
This report shows, according to the spokesman, that “Zamzam camp will witness the fifth phase of the integrated food classification stages, indicating the possibility of similar conditions in other locations in Al-Fasher area, where the internally displaced persons are located.”
In this context, he pointed out that “many other areas in Sudan are at risk of famine, if the conflict continues and humanitarian access continues to be restricted,” affirming”the urgent need for unhindered humanitarian access and the need for all parties to fulfill their responsibilities to facilitate the delivery of humanitarian assistance across borders and across conflict lines.”
Ben Jamyei also affirmed the need for humanitarian access to be accompanied by massive resources and sufficient funding to reduce the suffering of the Sudanese, renewing his call on the international community to redouble its efforts to provide humanitarian funding and enhance the regional response, and specifically appealing to neighboring countries to support those displaced by the conflict.

He appreciated the mediation efforts and considered them another step on the right path, stressing that “external interventions fuel the crisis and prevent progress towards peace and must be condemned publicly and strongly.” Addressing the members of the Security Council, he added: “We cannot stand idly by while we see an entire nation on the brink of collapse. It is time to act.
