Sudan Events – Agencies

The death toll from rains, floods, and inundations in Sudan has risen to 148, with 246 injuries in 11 states.

The spokesperson for the National Council of Civil Defense, Major General Qureshi Hussein, told “Sudan Tribune” on Wednesday that the number of deaths due to the rains reached 148, including 59 in the Nile River State, 31 in the Northern State, 16 in the Red Sea, 22 in Kassala, 7 in Gedaref, 4 in South Kordofan, 3 in Al-Jazira, 2 in each of White Nile, North Kordofan, and Blue Nile, and one death in Khartoum.

He confirmed that the number of injuries reached 246, with 166 in the Northern State, 47 in Kassala, 29 in the Nile River State, 3 in the Red Sea, and one injury in the White Nile.

He noted that rains and floods swept away national and local roads, including the Haya-Atbara, Merowe-Tangasi, and Nawa-Karima roads.

The Civil Defense spokesperson emphasized that precautionary measures taken by the Civil Defense included water drainage, evacuating citizens in some areas, and providing shelter materials such as tents, tarpaulins, blankets, and mosquito nets, in addition to water tanks and chlorine for water purification and disinfection.

Qureshi Hussein rejected citizens’ criticisms in the Arbaat Dam area regarding the inability of the Civil Defense to retrieve bodies due to the depth of the water, asserting that this claim is incorrect and that there are stationed forces, trained divers, and modern equipment still working in the Arbaat Dam. He confirmed the stability of the situation in the Arbaat Dam and Tokar areas, despite a new influx of water from the Kuber Doliya area, pointing out an increase in the number of submerged neighborhoods to six, including the market.
