Jordan: Prime Minister from Outside the “Traditional Options”

Sudan Events – Agencies
Jaafar Hassan heads an “economic government.”
Jordanian King Abdullah II appointed his office director, Jaafar Hassan, as prime minister, succeeding Bisher Al-Khasawneh. The selection of a non-traditional figure for the role surprised political elites, who had been searching for a weighty political personality to lead a phase characterized by “facing the new parliament,” which saw the Islamic Action Front party win 31 seats in the recent elections, making it the largest parliamentary bloc for the first time.
It is worth noting that Hassan began his public service career in the early 2000s when his name was mentioned in key administration positions at the royal court, though he remained reserved in his social and media appearances, even while working with numerous prime ministers in the Ministry of Planning.
Sources that spoke with “Asharq Al-Awsat” expect the new government, which is expected to have a strong economic focus, to take shape by the end of the week, and predict tensions between the executive and legislative branches in Jordan.
