International parties have decided to hold a ministerial meeting next week in New York to assess the challenges and coordinate collective action regarding Sudan.

The meeting will take place during the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly, which will hold its general debate from September 24 to 30.

In a joint statement, the United States, Saudi Arabia, the European Union, and the United Nations announced the organization of a “high-level ministerial meeting on the sidelines of the 79th session of the General Assembly to support the humanitarian response in Sudan and the region.”

The statement added, “The important ministerial event next Wednesday presents an opportunity to assess challenges and collectively determine the way forward.”

The meeting will call for concerted global action to address the consequences of Sudan’s worsening humanitarian crisis and its impact on the region, and to increase support for ongoing relief efforts.

The statement highlighted that Sudan is facing a humanitarian crisis of catastrophic proportions, with an unprecedented hunger crisis, as approximately 26 million people suffer from acute food insecurity.

It emphasized that the conflict has inflicted severe harm on civilians, with rising concerns about the situation of women and girls in the face of ongoing violations, in addition to the disruption of essential services and livelihoods for millions of people.

The statement also pointed out that humanitarian organizations are striving to scale up life-saving activities in an extremely challenging environment, with a wide range of obstacles, including floods, hindering access.
