Rebuilding UN Peacekeeping Efforts

Sudan Events – Agencies
UN peacekeeping operations are facing increasing pressure due to declining international support and rising security challenges in some of the regions where they are deployed. Many peacekeeping missions have failed to achieve their core objectives due to deteriorating security conditions or tensions between member states funding these operations. At the same time, there is growing concern about the UN’s ability to manage new security crises, such as those emerging in parts of Africa and the Middle East.
In 2024, the United Nations will need to reassess its peacekeeping operations to enhance their effectiveness. Priority should be given to strengthening current peacekeeping missions, such as those in Mali, the Central African Republic, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, where UN forces face significant challenges in protecting civilians and stabilizing the region. In some cases, like in Mali, UN forces have had to withdraw from the country due to worsening security or a lack of cooperation from local governments.
The UN could take this opportunity to redesign its approach to peacekeeping, potentially relying more on regional and local partnerships to enhance joint efforts. For example, collaboration with the African Union in training and funding can be increased to support peace efforts on the continent. The UN could also enhance its involvement in regional peacekeeping initiatives led by local states, such as those organized by the G5 Sahel countries in Africa.
Moreover, the UN can focus on developing new tools for peacekeeping operations, including enhancing technological capacities by employing drones and modern surveillance tools. This would improve the ability of UN forces to better monitor security situations and take swift action to protect civilians when violence escalates.
Finally, member states must provide greater financial support for peacekeeping operations. The decline in funding poses a significant threat to the UN’s ability to carry out its missions effectively. Major countries with larger financial resources, such as the United States and China, can play a pivotal role in supporting peacekeeping budgets.
10. Adapting to Political Shifts in the United States
The year 2024 could bring significant changes in U.S. policy towards the United Nations. The upcoming U.S. presidential election may lead to drastic shifts in the American approach to the international organization, especially if Donald Trump returns to office. The previous Trump administration showed reluctance toward supporting the UN and cut funding for many of its programs, including peacekeeping efforts and humanitarian aid.
If Trump or another candidate from the same political spectrum wins, the UN may face significant challenges in maintaining U.S. support. The organization may need to operate more independently and strengthen its relationships with other member states to compensate for any potential reduction in funding or political backing. On the other hand, if the current President Joe Biden or another Democratic candidate wins, the U.S. is likely to continue providing stronger support for the organization.
