Washington Post Loses 200,000 Subscriptions Following Decision Not to Endorse U.S. Presidential Candidate
Over 200,000 individuals canceled their subscriptions to The Washington Post after the American newspaper announced last week that it would not endorse any candidate in the presidential elections, as reported by news outlets on Monday.
National Public Radio in the United States cited this figure, according to “two people within the newspaper familiar with internal matters.”
The significant loss of subscriptions is a blow to the media outlet already facing financial difficulties, according to the Associated Press.
Last year, The Washington Post had over 2.5 million subscribers, most of whom were online, ranking it third in circulation after The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal.
Olivia Peterson, a spokesperson for the newspaper, declined to comment on the report when contacted by the Associated Press.
The editorial board had prepared a report to endorse Democratic candidate Kamala Harris but announced instead on Friday that it would leave the decision to readers.
