Sudan’s Crop Patterns Expected to Change
Sudan Events – Reports
The Sudanese Minister of Agriculture and Forestry, Dr. Abubakr Omar Al-Bushra, stated that climate change has both positive and negative impacts. While some regions experience drought, Sudan has seen an increase in rainfall. Speaking at the Regional Forum on Accelerating Food Systems Transformation in the Arab World in Amman, Jordan, he highlighted how climate change in Sudan has led to higher rainfall. He also dismissed claims of widespread hunger in Sudan, emphasizing its rich natural resources and skilled farmers, along with a favorable climate allowing for diverse crop cultivation. “Sudan isn’t facing a food shortage; production is abundant. The challenge is delivering it to people in areas occupied by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF),” he said.
Al-Bushra stressed the importance of research institutions in Arab nations, given the impact of climate change on crop, vegetable, and fruit mapping. “Crop varieties will need to adapt to the changing climate,” he added. He also underlined the importance of scientific research and agricultural technology, and he called for increased collaboration between Arab nations to develop climate-resilient varieties.
