Sudan Events – Follow-ups
The Acting Governor of South Darfur, Bashir Mursal, issued new decisions on Sunday, relieving 70 traditional leaders in the state and directing that charges be filed against them for their alleged involvement in the destruction of cities in the Darfur region, the capital Khartoum, and other states.
In a decree issued by the Governor of South Darfur, Bashir Mursal, it was stated: “It has been decided to relieve 70 of the Omda (district leaders) and Shurati (tribal chiefs) in South Darfur for their support and alignment with the Rapid Support Forces militia.”
He explained that the relieved leaders were involved in mobilizing recruits, harboring mercenaries from neighboring countries, and inciting them to destroy infrastructure in South Darfur. They followed a strategy of mobilization from Nyala to sabotage Khartoum and other Darfur cities, as well as regions in Western and Northern Kordofan, Al-Jazeera, Sennar, and White Nile.
He pointed out that the group was responsible for the systematic killing of prominent figures in Nyala, looting cities, raping women, and causing the deaths of thousands of their own tribesmen and those under their leadership, while declaring war against the state.
He called on the relevant authorities to open cases against the dismissed leaders and bring them to justice.
