Sudan Events – Agencies
The Secretary-General of the Norwegian Refugee Council, Jan Egeland, said on Sunday that the humanitarian crisis in Sudan is worse than the crises in Ukraine, Gaza, and Somalia combined.
In an interview with the German News Agency following his visit to Darfur and other areas, Egeland stated, “The lives of 24 million people are at risk in Sudan.”
He added, “We are witnessing a strong countdown towards famine, despair, and the collapse of an entire civilization.”
Egeland emphasized that conflicts like those in Ukraine and the Middle East should not distract from the suffering of civilians in Sudan.
He further stated, “If we agree that human life has equal value anywhere in the world, then Sudan should be at the top of the list of important matters right now.”
Egeland explained that he had witnessed the consequences of the conflict, which has been ongoing for 600 days.
He said, “In many areas, including those where the council previously operated, there were clear signs of a horrific war. House after house, area after area, was burned, destroyed, and looted.”
Egeland warned that the situation is “on the brink of exploding,” similar to what happened in 2015, when millions of refugees from war-torn areas, including Syria, crossed the Mediterranean Sea and reached the borders of European countries.
He added, “I don’t think Germany, the European Union, the Scandinavian countries, and France want that.”
He concluded that investing in Sudan will not only help deter citizens from seeking better opportunities elsewhere, but it is also “the only thing” that aligns with European values and interests.
