Sudan Events – Follow-ups
On Tuesday, the Humanitarian Aid Commission accused the Rapid Support Forces militia of looting a humanitarian aid convoy belonging to the World Food Programme (WFP). The convoy, carrying supplies intended for the “Zamzam” camp in the city of El Fasher, the capital of North Darfur State, was reportedly redirected to South Darfur.
In a statement issued by the Humanitarian Aid Commission, it was revealed that “during November, the Rapid Support Forces militia intercepted and attacked a humanitarian aid convoy from the WFP near the Armal area, located on the border between West and North Kordofan states. The convoy contained approximately 7,000 metric tons of various food supplies en route from Port Sudan to the Zamzam camp in North Darfur.”
The statement indicated that the militia diverted the convoy to Nyala, the capital of South Darfur State, which is under their control.
The commission condemned what it described as “behavior contrary to the principles and rules of humanitarian work,” stating that such actions aim to starve civilians, impoverish them, and expose them to hunger and malnutrition, while instilling fear among the population.
The statement emphasized the importance of respecting international humanitarian law, meeting the basic needs of affected individuals, and adhering to established international principles and standards, such as neutrality, independence, humanity, and respect for the dignity of Sudanese citizens as a humanitarian duty.
It also noted that the militia has continued its violations and disregard for commitments, particularly the Jeddah Declaration signed in May 2023.
The Humanitarian Aid Commission reaffirmed its commitment to facilitating and coordinating efforts among humanitarian partners to mitigate harm and alleviate the suffering of those affected and displaced.
