United Nations: Imminent Resource Shortage for Communities Hosting Sudanese Refugees

Sudan Events – Follow-ups
The UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs, Tom Fletcher, said on Saturday that the resources of communities in Chad hosting Sudanese refugees have started to run out, with prices for goods soaring.
Fletcher stated in a press release, “Local communities in Chad are reporting that their resources are running out. Food prices have skyrocketed, pushing vulnerable families into further poverty.”
He mentioned that he spent the previous week traveling to Sudan, where he spoke to communities, leaders, and humanitarian partners, emphasizing that the message from those living at the heart of the crisis to the international community is clear: “We are not invisible.”
Fletcher reported that Sudan is facing the worst hunger crisis in the world, with 26 million people suffering from hunger, and nearly 750,000 individuals are on the brink of famine. He also noted that sexual violence is widespread, with “stories of rape, sexual slavery, and horrific violence against women and girls.”
