Heavy Crowds at Banks on First Day of Currency Replacement

Sudan Events – Follow-ups

On Tuesday, the process of replacing 1,000 and 500-pound banknotes began in all targeted states.

In Port Sudan, the capital of the Red Sea State, the Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Sudan, Mohammed Osman Ahmed, inaugurated the currency replacement process at the Central Bank’s Port Sudan branch. He stressed the Central Bank’s commitment to ensuring the success of the operation and called for cooperation among all concerned parties to protect citizens’ rights and streamline the replacement process.

A Central Bank delegation, led by Abdulrahman Mohammed Abdulrahman, head of the Operations and Monitoring Committee, visited several commercial bank branches in Port Sudan to assess the process. They reported on public satisfaction, particularly regarding account openings, deposits, and withdrawals.

The committee emphasized simplifying banking procedures to facilitate the process, as this currency replacement is being conducted solely through bank account deposits.

Commercial bank managers in Port Sudan commended the Central Bank’s visit, reporting a smooth start to the process despite high turnout. Banks have increased deposit and withdrawal counters and enhanced customer service.

Monitoring and evaluation efforts by the Central Bank will continue throughout the process to address challenges and ensure citizens’ satisfaction.
