The defendant, Ali Abdel-Rahman Kushayb, denied before the International Criminal Court that he is the same person sought by the court. He said, “I am not Ali Kushayb,” explaining that he mentioned this name over the phone when he surrendered because he was desperate.
He added, “The court did not want to talk to me until I said ‘Kushayb’,” pointing out that he had been hiding after being warned by the government, and confirmed that if he had not done so, he would have been killed.
Kushayb requested to address the court at the end of the closing statements, which concluded on Friday at the International Criminal Court in The Hague. The judge warned his lawyer before his statement that what he says could be used against him.
In his address to the judges, Kushayb stated that he surrendered himself and was not brought by anyone, so the court could consider his case and determine his fate, noting that he had been in detention for 4 years.
