Israel Shuts Embassy in Dublin Over “Hostile Policies”

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government has closed its embassy in Dublin, citing Ireland’s “extreme anti-Israel policies.” The move has sparked criticism from Irish officials, including Higher Education Minister Simon Harris, who described it as “deeply regrettable.”
Harris rejected the notion that Ireland is hostile to Israel, emphasizing the country’s commitment to peace, human rights, and international law. “Ireland advocates for a two-state solution where both Israel and Palestine can coexist in peace and security,” he said.
Israel’s decision follows Ireland’s recognition of Palestinian statehood in May and its support for legal actions against Israel at the International Court of Justice, accusing it of “genocide.” Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar defended the closure, stating it reflects Ireland’s growing alignment with anti-Israel policies.
Ireland’s support for these legal measures has reignited tensions. While condemning Hamas’s actions in October 2023, Irish officials, including Foreign Minister Michael Martin, stressed that any allegations of genocide must be addressed by international courts. Despite diplomatic fallout, Ireland maintains its stance on upholding international law and Palestinian rights.
