Sudan Events – Rehab Abdullah
On Thursday evening, the Eastern Train departed from Port Sudan, heading toward Atbara, after a year-long halt caused by war-related damage to railways and the impact of rains and floods that affected the Red Sea and Nile River States last year.
The train’s departure was attended by the Minister of Transport, the Governor of the Red Sea State, and the directors of maritime, aviation, and railway companies, along with other officials.
The Governor of the Red Sea State, Lieutenant General Mustafa Mohamed Noor, hailed the train’s return as a significant achievement after a year-long stoppage. He added that the train brings promising prospects for various states in Sudan, especially the Red Sea and Nile River States.
Minister of Transport Abubakar Abu Al-Qasim praised the railway workers for their efficient efforts, describing the train’s resumption as a victory dedicated to the fighters and a testament to their dignity. He announced plans for a train to Shendi early next year and another to Wadi Halfa by the end of next month.
The Minister also revealed an agreement to study the railway line connecting Sudan and Egypt, as well as plans to rehabilitate the Eastern Line linking Port Sudan, Haya, Kassala, Sennar, and Damazin.
Acknowledging the low wages and difficult living conditions of workers, the Minister commended their ability to turn challenges into tangible achievements. He also hinted at an imminent breakthrough in railway operations, emphasizing the country’s resilience against saboteurs.
The Director General of Sudan Railways Corporation, Musa Al-Qawm, stated that preparations to resume the train service had been underway for three months, with freight trains operating since last month to clear the tracks. He described the project as a challenge that the corporation tackled with determination and competence.
He noted that the train would operate biweekly, departing Atbara on Monday afternoons and returning from Port Sudan on Thursday evenings. Al-Qawm pledged the continuation of train operations and the corporation’s self-reliance in boosting national revenues.
Eastern Region Director Mohamed Al-Fadl Hassan highlighted the workers’ determination to restore the railway’s functionality, praising the support of relevant authorities in reviving railway operations.
