Government: The Militia’s Targeting of Vital Facilities is a Gross Violation of International Humanitarian Law

Sudan Events – Reports

The Minister of Culture and Information and official government spokesperson, Khalid Al-Iyasser, stated that the militia has intensified its terrorist attacks to destroy vital facilities in Sudan, targeting dams and power stations, most recently the attacks on Merowe Dam and the Dongola power station.

Al-Iyasser added in a tweet, “These actions constitute a blatant violation of international humanitarian law and the Geneva Conventions, which prohibit targeting essential civilian facilities such as water and electricity stations.”

He explained that the militia’s criminal behavior endangers civilian lives in Sudan and exacerbates their suffering.

He further added, “The militia has previously destroyed museums, mosques, churches, markets, schools, and universities, attacking both public and private properties and targeting the cultural and religious heritage of the Sudanese people.”

Al-Iyasser concluded, “These criminal acts contradict international efforts to maintain peace and regional security and emphasize the need to hold the militia and those supplying it with strategic drones accountable. These drones are being used to commit such crimes, in flagrant violation of international humanitarian law and the Geneva Conventions related to vital installations.”
