Central Bank Allocates 100 Million Pounds for Cargo Handling Workers’ Entitlements

Sudan Events – Follow-ups

On Thursday, the Member of the Sovereign Council and Assistant Commander-in-Chief, Major General Ibrahim Jaber, chaired a meeting to facilitate the World Food Programme’s operations in the country, particularly regarding the provision of local currency and necessary liquidity.

Ahmad Mohamed Osman, Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Sudan, stated in a press briefing that the meeting discussed several issues, including the provision of local currency to facilitate the loading and unloading of ships carrying relief goods to Sudan. He emphasized the World Food Programme’s significant contributions in providing food to people in unsafe regions of Sudan, as well as supplying large quantities of medicine and relief materials.

The Central Bank has allocated 100 million pounds for four commercial banks operating within the Port Authority to pay the entitlements of cargo handling workers and address financial challenges related to ships in the port.

Alex Marionielli, the Acting Director of the World Food Programme in Sudan, explained that the programme faced liquidity issues and had difficulty securing sufficient local currency to carry out its operations and reach those affected by the war in Sudan. He confirmed that the direct meeting with the Central Bank was a positive step to ensure the programme receives the funds and liquidity it needs to reach as many targeted beneficiaries as possible and carry out all its humanitarian, service, and relief operations in the country.
