ICC Delegation to Visit Sudan Amid Warnings of Worsening Crisis

Deputy Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC), Nazhat Shameem Khan, warned that the situation in Darfur could deteriorate further, citing recent reports on the situation in El Fasher following attacks by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and affiliated groups on the city and the Zamzam and Abu Shouk displacement camps.

During her briefing to the UN Security Council on Thursday, Khan said it was difficult to find words to describe the scale of the suffering taking place there.

She also highlighted the limited resources available to the Office of the Prosecutor relative to the volume of allegations under investigation, urging Council members to provide more support than ever to help prevent the cycle of violence fueled by a deep sense of impunity among those who continue to commit crimes against civilians.

Khan referenced previous justice efforts for Darfur victims, notably the prosecution of Ali Muhammad Ali Abd-Al-Rahman, also known as “Ali Kushayb”, expressing hope for further positive developments in cooperation with the Sudanese government.

She explained that the Office had conducted additional meetings with the Sudanese government, particularly during a previous visit to Port Sudan, facilitated by Sudanese authorities. This visit enabled the identification and engagement of additional potential witnesses. Another visit is planned in the near future.
