Haroun: The “National Congress” Will Only Return to Power Through Elections

Acting chairman of the National Congress Party, Ahmed Haroun, stated that the party has made a strategic decision not to return to power except through the ballot box, affirming that it will not participate in any unelected transitional government after the war.

In an interview with Reuters, Haroun asserted that the Western model is not suitable for Sudan, and emphasized the need to define the role of the military in politics in light of the country’s fragile security situation and foreign ambitions. “This won’t be the first war in the country, nor will it be the last,” he added.

Haroun said the National Congress Party envisions a hybrid governance structure in which the military retains sovereignty until all threats are eliminated, after which civilians would assume control of government through elections.

“The Western model is not practical for Sudan. We need to develop a Sudan-specific model for the military’s role in politics, given the security fragility and the greed of foreign powers—because this won’t be the first or last war in the country,” he repeated.
