North Darfur Governor: Living Conditions in El Fasher Are Intolerable

North Darfur Governor Hafiz Bakhit declared on Sunday that living conditions in El Fasher have collapsed, calling on Sovereignty Council Chairman and Army Commander General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan to end the siege on the city imposed by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

In a statement, Bakhit said, “The living situation in El Fasher has become unbearable, as conditions have significantly worsened in recent weeks.”

He noted that citizens are now relying on ambaz—a byproduct of peanut and sesame oil extraction typically used as animal feed—as a primary food source, and even that is becoming unavailable.

He revealed that there is an acute shortage and near-total absence of food supplies, alongside skyrocketing prices for available goods.

According to the Governor, a quarter sack of millet—the city’s main staple—now costs around 500,000 Sudanese pounds and is still scarcely available in markets.

The supply of millet in Nyfasha Market—the only operating market in El Fasher—has declined drastically, with merchants reporting that less than five sacks were available in recent days.
