Bread Price Hike Triggers Boycott Calls in Khartoum

Residents in Khartoum have announced a boycott of bread purchases after bakeries sharply raised prices on Friday. The price of a loaf rose from 150 to 200 Sudanese pounds, meaning five loaves now cost 1,000 pounds.
Many residents said the increase was unjustified, with no clear explanations provided by either authorities or bakery owners. Some bakeries cited rising input costs for flour, oil, and fuel, but consumers expressed anger and demanded regulatory authorities explain what they described as “unjustified hikes,” urging bakery owners to consider the worsening economic hardship.
Meanwhile, localities in River Nile State—including Shendi and Berber—also introduced price increases on Thursday and Friday. In Shendi, six pieces of traditional bread now cost 1,000 pounds instead of seven, while five loaves of machine-made bread are sold for the same price.
