Customs Launches Electronic Container Tracking System at Southern Port

On Monday, Lt. Gen. Salah Ahmed Ibrahim, Director General of the Customs Authority, presided over the launch of an electronic container tracking system at the Southern Port Customs Department. The system was developed in collaboration with Zain Telecom, the General Directorate of ICT, and the Customs Risk Division, based on international standards.
Senior officials attended the ceremony, including Maj. Gen. Babiker Yousif Babiker, Assistant Director for Administration and Finance; Maj. Gen. Mohamed Al-Nour Ali Al-Nour, Assistant Director for Customs Operations; Maj. Gen. Nabigh Al-Madani Ahmed, Assistant Director for Compliance and Facilitation; Maj. Gen. Jamal Al-Awad Al-Amin, Assistant Director for Anti-Smuggling; and Maj. Gen. Imad Mohamed Nour, Director of the Red Sea Customs.
After the inauguration, Ibrahim was briefed on the system’s mechanisms and praised the extensive efforts behind its development, describing it as a milestone that will enhance customs capabilities in trade facilitation and regulatory oversight.
The new system provides high levels of security while reducing costs and clearance times. It uses GPS-enabled receivers, digital maps, advanced navigation tools, and real-time data transmission via SIM cards, allowing for accurate tracking of container movements.
The initiative reflects Customs’ ongoing drive to strengthen electronic monitoring, build smart partnerships across sectors, protect the national economy, secure borders, and modernize its IT infrastructure after damage caused by rebel militia attacks.
