UN: Jebel Marra Disaster Kills 375

The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) reported Monday that a landslide in the village of Tirsin in Jebel Marra, Darfur, has left 375 people dead.

In a statement posted on Facebook, the UN agency said “the landslide in Jebel Marra claimed 375 lives, with many still missing.”

It noted that search and rescue efforts face major challenges due to rough terrain and heavy rainfall. The agency has provided hygiene kits and medical supplies to the affected areas.

The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said it will review findings from the ongoing assessment mission on Tuesday to determine further needs.

The assessment team, which included UN agencies, international, and local organizations, had to transport aid on pack animals, taking more than 12 hours to reach the isolated, flood-hit village.

OCHA confirmed that life-saving aid has already been delivered to over 1,000 people, with urgent needs including food, health services, nutrition, water, sanitation, and hygiene support.

Mobile medical teams treated families suffering from minor illnesses, screened children for malnutrition, and provided care for trauma, malaria, and cholera cases.
