EU Apologizes After Withdrawing Invitation to Figures Linked to Janjaweed

The European Union has issued an apology to the Sudanese diaspora after rescinding invitations extended to Ahmed Tugod and Walid Adam Madibo, following revelations of their ties to the Janjaweed militia, accused of committing grave atrocities against civilians in Sudan.

The move came in response to mounting pressure from Sudanese communities abroad, who staged a rally outside the EU headquarters in Brussels. Protesters raised banners denouncing militia crimes, with slogans such as “No to Janjaweed… No to criminals,” and firmly rejected any attempts to whitewash militia leaders or grant them international platforms.

According to a statement by the Sudanese Patriots’ Assembly, EU officials acknowledged the vigilance of the Sudanese diaspora and confirmed they had received explicit calls for a firmer stance on the crimes committed — with some demonstrators even urging support for military efforts to suppress the Janjaweed rebellion.

Activists hailed the apology as a moral victory for the Sudanese diaspora and a strong message that free Sudanese voices can resist attempts to legitimize militias implicated in killings and abuses. The Assembly pledged to continue its popular and diplomatic struggle until justice is served and victims are honored.
