Kamil Idris: Sudan’s Return to African Union “a Matter of Time”

Prime Minister Dr. Kamil Idris said Sudan’s delegation to the UN General Assembly in New York secured understandings with the AU Chairperson, the AU Commission, and several African leaders on the country’s reinstatement to the African Union.

Speaking Wednesday at a Sudan News Agency briefing after the delegation’s return, Idris stressed that “the AU needs Sudan’s return more than the reverse,” recalling Sudan’s role as a founding member of the Organization of African Unity.

He noted strong support among African leaders and said Sudan’s comeback is only a matter of time. He emphasized that agreements reached in New York were anchored in “a strong Sudan, not a broken one.”

Idris added that the delegation also worked to break the siege on El-Fasher and other blockaded cities, pressing the UN General Assembly to put pressure on the “rebel militia” to halt its abuses against civilians.

He confirmed Sudan formally requested that the Rapid Support Forces be designated a terrorist organization. The delegation, he said, firmly upheld Sudan’s sovereignty and territorial integrity before the international community.

The prime minister added that he sensed strong backing for Sudan from the UN and international partners, noting he personally invited Secretary-General António Guterres to visit Sudan—an invitation the UN chief accepted.
