Government: Human Rights in Sudan Cannot Be Imposed from Outside

Sudan’s Permanent Representative to the UN Human Rights Council, Ambassador Hassan Hamid, rejected the decision to extend the mandate of the Fact-Finding Mission on Sudan, which was passed by vote on Monday.

In his closing remarks at the Council’s session that adopted the British-sponsored resolution, Ambassador Hamid thanked the countries that voted against the extension and supported Sudan’s position, saying they had voted in defense of the UN Charter and the established principles of state sovereignty and respect for national decisions.

He questioned whether the decision truly served the goal of protecting human rights and achieving justice, asking: “Does this mean that existing human rights mechanisms in Sudan, including the UN High Commissioner’s country office and the appointed expert, are now ineffective or useless?”

He added, “If the answer is no, then mandating an additional mechanism of three individuals through a resolution that equates the rebellious militia with the Sudanese Armed Forces clearly serves as political blackmail and pressure on Sudan — especially as the army continues to achieve victories over the terrorist militia.”

Hamid further criticized the resolution for failing to name the country that sponsors the militia and supplies it with weapons, equipment, and mercenaries, questioning how such a resolution could contribute to ending the fighting or protecting civilians.

He accused the sponsors of the resolution of shielding the state that supports the militia — referring to the United Arab Emirates — despite multiple reports backed by evidence confirming its involvement.

The ambassador affirmed that Sudan remains committed to its people and considers human rights a national priority, not an external mandate imposed by resolutions. He stressed that the Sudanese Armed Forces, which the resolution unfairly equates with the militia, are fulfilling their constitutional duty with the full backing of the Sudanese people.
