Government Decisions to Strengthen Security in Khartoum

The Khartoum Locality Security Coordination Committee issued a series of decisions and directives on Monday aimed at enhancing security, improving organization, and combating negative phenomena in the city.

The committee decided to clear the Central Market tunnel area of all violations, random structures, and kiosks, and to ban the practice of professions outside approved locations within the market. It also ordered the relocation of unauthorized transport stops near the Sports City and the market to alternative sites, with security forces deployed to prevent the recurrence of such violations.

Furthermore, the committee banned the operation of informal transport hubs within the locality’s boundaries and instructed transport operators to adhere to officially designated stations before April 15, 2023.

The meeting also discussed the need to provide public transport for underserved routes due to the steady return of residents to their homes. It reviewed issues related to fragmented routes and proposed solutions for student transportation in coordination with Khartoum Transport Company, the Public Transport Authority, the Petroleum Directorate, and the Traffic Police.

The committee also emphasized the need to combat the re-emergence of street children in central Khartoum and ordered intensified campaigns to detain and transfer them to care centers. It also directed authorities to crack down on criminal gangs known as “Tis‘a Tawila” (“Long Nine”) by dismantling their hotspots and prosecuting those who facilitate their activities, as part of efforts to restore public order and the authority of the state.

Separately, the committee instructed a thorough review of permits for towing and transporting disabled vehicles, furniture, and other goods, ensuring all documents are verified by relevant authorities including the Public Prosecution, Police, and Military Intelligence. It also emphasized the enforcement of the Sovereign Council’s decision requiring the withdrawal of all supporting armed forces from Khartoum.

The meeting concluded by forming sub-security committees at the administrative unit level to submit recommendations to the higher committee. It further stressed the need to enforce previous decisions through strict implementation mechanisms.
