Kamel El-Wazir, co-chaired the General Assembly of the Nile Valley River Navigation Authority, attended by the Authority’s board chairperson and members.
The meeting discussed the Authority’s recent performance and plans to modernize and upgrade its river fleet as part of a comprehensive development project being implemented in partnership with the private sector. The goal is to strengthen river transport between the High Dam Port and Wadi Halfa, thereby boosting trade and facilitating the movement of passengers and goods between the two brotherly nations.
Minister Haroun stressed that the Nile Valley River Navigation Authority represents an exemplary model of cooperation and integration between Sudan and Egypt. He affirmed that the Sudanese government attaches great importance to developing the Authority and restoring its pioneering role in regional river transport.
He further stated that Sudan supports all efforts aimed at advancing and modernizing the Authority so it can resume its distinguished services in passenger and cargo transport between the two sides. He underscored the need to diversify the Authority’s activities to expand its revenue base and ensure financial sustainability.
Haroun added that recent rehabilitation works at Wadi Halfa Port and the modernization of the river fleet mark a significant step toward achieving full logistical integration among ports, railways, and road transport, serving the common interests of the peoples of the Nile Valley and enhancing bilateral trade.
He concluded by emphasizing that partnering with the private sector in operating and managing the Authority’s assets is a strategic direction aimed at accelerating development, improving operational efficiency, and increasing the competitiveness of river transport compared to other modes of transport.
