Sudanese Official Impresses at China–Africa Mining Forum

Ahmed Haroun Al-Toum, Director-General of the Sudanese Geological Research Authority — the technical arm of the Ministry of Minerals — captivated participants at the China–Africa Mining Forum, held during the 2025 Tianjin Mining Conference in Tianjin, China, with a highly technical presentation that showcased Sudan’s vast mineral potential.

In his presentation, Al-Toum outlined the tectonic and geological framework of Sudan, noting that the country is endowed with diverse mineral resources including gold, copper, chromium, iron, and energy minerals such as cobalt and lithium, in addition to strategic and rare minerals — making Sudan one of Africa’s most promising countries for mining and exploration.

He highlighted that mining culture in Sudan dates back more than 3,000 years, when ancient Nubians practiced gold extraction and iron smelting, placing Sudan among the continent’s oldest mining regions.

Al-Toum also noted that the Ministry of Minerals and its affiliated institutions — including the Geological Research Authority, the Sudanese Mineral Resources Company, Sudamin Company, and Ariab Mining Company — play a vital role in creating an attractive investment environment through updated regulations, open geological data, and enhanced partnerships with investors to develop the mining sector.

The director-general also delivered a promotional presentation highlighting successful mining companies operating in Sudan and showcasing promising investment opportunities in mineral development amid improving infrastructure and continued government support for the mining sector — considered a key driver of Sudan’s economic growth.

The presentation drew strong engagement from participants, who praised the professional and scientific depth of Sudan’s representative. Observers said the presentation left a lasting impression and vividly reflected Sudan’s rich mineral wealth and significant investment potential.
