Russia’s Permanent Representative to the UN expressed deep concern over escalating violence in the city of El Fasher following its capture by the RSF militia, describing the atrocities committed there as shocking.
Speaking at Thursday’s UN Security Council session, he noted that Sudanese civilians had faced similar horrors in the states of Geneina and Gezira.
He added that the abuses occurring in areas outside Sudanese government control are well known to the Council, questioning whether the militia could be held accountable given the growing presence of foreign fighters in its ranks.
The Russian envoy reaffirmed his country’s opposition to any parallel power structures outside Sudan’s legitimate government, stressing that a peaceful solution must preserve the nation’s unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity.
He noted that Sudan’s authorities remain open to cooperation on humanitarian assistance but expect the UN and its partners to act in good faith and without politicization.
He further emphasized that any on-the-ground peace enforcement measures would be ineffective without the support of the Sudanese people and their legitimate government led by Prime Minister Dr. Kamel Idris.
