The UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) has confirmed that Sudan is experiencing the world’s largest displacement crisis, with 12 million people uprooted from their homes.
The agency reported that thousands of families continue to flee from El Fasher and across Darfur.
Jens Laerke, spokesperson for the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), said millions of Sudanese are in desperate need of assistance, with civilians and aid workers being killed with impunity amid rampant sexual violence. He called for secure access to humanitarian aid and for stronger protection and support for local organizations.
Shaun Hughes, the World Food Programme’s Emergency Coordinator for Sudan, described the situation as “the world’s largest humanitarian crisis by every measure,” with around 25 million people — half of the country’s population — facing severe hunger, and nearly five million children and mothers suffering from acute malnutrition.
