African Union Peace and Security Commissioner Bankole Adeoye stressed that the AU must lead the peace process in Sudan, asserting that sustainable solutions must follow the principle of “African solutions to African problems.”
Adeoye revealed high-level and ongoing coordination between the AU and the United Nations, represented by UN Envoy to Sudan Ramtane Lamamra, to unify platforms and avoid fragmented initiatives.
Speaking at a press conference in Addis Ababa marking the launch of the “AU Journal on Reconstruction,” he reaffirmed the AU’s firm stance on external meddling, saying: “Regarding foreign interventions, we will not allow anyone to inflame the conflict. We condemn all forms of interference in Sudan.”
He underscored the urgency of an immediate ceasefire and the need to give political actors space to launch a national dialogue. He also stressed the importance of ensuring accountability for grave violations.
Adeoye declared full AU support for investigations into atrocities committed in Darfur, in coordination with the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights, and called for all perpetrators to be brought to justice.
He added that combating terrorism remains a top priority for the continental body, emphasizing conflict prevention and support for states in strengthening their security capacities.
