$700 Million from the World Bank to Finance New Projects in Sudan

Sudan Events – Rehab Abdullah
World Bank Mission Chief Maryam Salem, the Bank’s Regional Director for Sudan, Ethiopia, and Eritrea, announced that the World Bank is preparing to finance new projects worth about $700 million, to be implemented over the next three years.
In a briefing to the Minister of Finance Dr. Jibril Ibrahim on Wednesday—attended by State Minister Mohammed Nour Abdel Daim, Planning Undersecretary Mohammed Bashar, Country Director Yoichiro Ishihara, economist Dr. Mohammed Osman, and officials from the Ministry’s External Financing and International Financial Institutions units—Salem affirmed the Bank’s continued support for major development projects in Sudan.
She stated that the Bank will contribute to financing recovery and reconstruction projects, and will coordinate the arrival of a technical advisory team in the coming period. According to her, the Bank’s priorities align with the government’s focus on health, agriculture, social protection, youth support, financial and economic reforms, renewable energy, electricity, digitalization, and telecommunications.
The mission also reviewed ongoing projects whose funding had not been interrupted, particularly in health and education.
Finance Minister Jibril Ibrahim stressed that health, water, recovery, and reconstruction remain top government priorities. He called for cooperation with humanitarian organizations and relevant bodies in implementing these projects, praising the World Bank’s efforts and its continued support for initiatives that help restore stability. He added that several pre-prepared feasibility studies exist—particularly for agricultural sector projects—which could be implemented through new partnerships.
