Head of Darfur Associations in the UK: London Is Falling Short on Sudan War

Abdallah Abu Garda, head of the Darfur Associations Union in the UK, has said that the United Kingdom is falling short in addressing developments in the Sudan conflict.

In an interview with Al-Muhaqqiq, Abu Garda said Britain has failed to fulfill its role due to misinformation from certain international organizations and what he described as political actors, alongside its desire to preserve political and economic ties with the UAE—leading it to overlook the ongoing genocide in Sudan despite repeated warnings from the association’s leadership.

Abu Garda added that Britain, as the country holding the Sudan file at the UN Security Council, appears to have a Foreign Office still dealing passively with the crisis, even as the humanitarian catastrophe intensifies daily—particularly in Darfur.

He noted that recent reports of the removal of official warnings regarding potential genocide—allegedly carried out by UK Foreign Office staff and reported by British media—demonstrate that political calculations have overshadowed moral and legal obligations.

He said the association had repeatedly warned of genocide risks and urged the implementation of Security Council Resolution 2736, which Britain itself sponsored. However, “foot-dragging persists as atrocities escalate,” he said, noting that during a Thursday meeting in London with organizations working in Sudan, the Foreign Office merely condemned events in El Fasher without presenting any practical steps or clear commitments.

When he asked the Foreign Office representative who bears responsibility for the El Fasher genocide, despite the warnings given to the UK government, the reply was that the responsibility lies with the Rapid Support Forces.

Abu Garda stressed that condemnation alone is insufficient in the face of mass graves, ethnically-motivated killings, and the disappearance of thousands of civilians. He said what is required is genuine political will that restores the UK’s leadership role in protecting civilians and halting genocide.
