“Sudan Doctors”: 800 Medical Personnel Killed, Injured, or Missing Since Start of War

The Sudan Doctors Network announced Thursday that the number of medical personnel killed or injured since the outbreak of the war has risen to approximately 741, in addition to 59 individuals who remain missing with unknown whereabouts.

The Rapid Support Forces militia has faced accusations of assassinating dozens of medical workers in the Kordofan and Darfur states, most recently involving the killing of several staff members working at the Saudi Hospital in the city of El Fasher.

In a statement, the Sudan Doctors Network said it had documented since April 2023 the killing of more than 234 medical personnel, with the number of injured exceeding 507, in addition to over 59 missing persons whose fate remains unknown.

The statement added that the RSF is detaining around 73 medical workers in the city of Nyala, South Darfur, under extremely poor detention conditions.

The network stressed that these figures reflect the scale of targeting and grave violations against health sector workers, in clear violation of international laws that guarantee the protection of medical personnel and health facilities during armed conflicts.

It called on all parties to immediately halt violations, ensure the protection of medical staff, release detainees, and disclose the fate of the missing. The network also urged the international community and humanitarian organizations to take urgent action to pressure for the protection of health workers and guarantee their safe access to perform their humanitarian duties.
