UN Official: Brutality in Sudan Knows No Bounds

Edim Sorno, Head of Operations and Advocacy at the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), stated that “the brutality of the conflict in Sudan knows no bounds,” with Kordofan emerging as a new center of violence and suffering. Attacks have caused deaths, injuries, and extensive destruction, severely restricting humanitarian access.

She provided figures on civilian casualties this month and noted that a joint UN team could not reach Kadugli as planned on December 15 due to deteriorating security conditions.

Sorno cited a December 5 attack on a World Food Program truck in North Kordofan, which severely injured the driver, as evidence of the extreme risks faced by humanitarian workers.

She stressed the urgent need for the Security Council to send a clear message that attacks on civilians, sexual violence, and other serious breaches of international humanitarian law will not be tolerated, and called for enabling humanitarian personnel, including local partners, to operate safely.

Sorno concluded by emphasizing the urgent need to stop the fighting, halt arms flows fueling the conflict, and push for a nationwide ceasefire.
